Adult Acne- The Cause, Prevention & Treatment

Adult Acne- The Cause, Prevention & Treatment
Why do I still get acne at this age? A question often asked by people in their 30s, 40s or even 50s. Acne is not just a teernager’s nightmare. It can persist through mature age as well.

The cause: Adult acne arises from many reasons including hormonal changes, menstrual cycles and stress. The use of incorrect skincare can also be the cause. Diet and lack of sleep is also a contribution to this problem.

Prevention: We won’t be able to control hormonal changes and menstrual cycles. However, we can prevent other factors such as stress, skincare, diet and lack of sleep.

Treatment:

Stress leads to many related problems, not just acne. When we are stressed, our body is in a fight-or-flight mode which releases the stress hormones, such as cortisol and androgens. These hormones push our skin to produce more oil and hence, aggravate acne. Try to avoid stress by thinking calmly, participate in exercise or yoga classes.

Diet including fruit and green vegetables is a must on a daily basis. In fact, we should include at least 5 serves of vegetables and 2 serves of fruit per day. Drinking plenty of water also helps to reduce the inflammation. Starting your day off with 2 cups of warm water with some drops of lime juice helps cleansing the body.

Skincare - If you haven't had acne before and suddenly you have now. The first thing to do is to discontinue the use of your current skincare product. Sometimes our body can react to things that have not been reacted to before. Just take a break, let your skin settle. If the problem still persists, use the elimination process to find the cause. If skincare was the issue, switch skincare to a more suitable brand.

Adult acne treatment involves patience, care and changes to your daily habit. Look for anti-inflammatory, soothing alternatives to incorporate into your acne skincare regime. Get plenty of sleep, include more green in your diet and eliminate stress.
